The white porcelain pottery kilns in Kwangju-gun, Namjong-myon`s
Punwon-ri and Kumsa-ri are would renown
as the origin of the Choson white porcelain. The entire region
of Kwangju-gun was used primarily for state-run porcelain
factories since the early Choson period.
A branch of the Saongwon
kiln, which manufactured all the porcelain for the royal
family and officials, was open and operated here until the
late Choson era. Firewood was abundant, the white clay was
of excellent quality, and the Han River facilitated transportation
of the finished goods.
Considering such geographic conditions, its easy to see why
so many ruins of pottery kilns were discovered in this region.
